Ivan Rod – Denmark

Translated from Danish

The Canadian jazz pianist Adrean Farrugia and the New York-based jazz saxophonist Joel Frahm have been part of the Canadian drummer Ernesto Cervini’s orchestra for decades and, as judging by liner notes, always had a very special bond to each other. It is the band that is explored and performed in a duo album, featuring game play, humor, grooves, musicality and technical profits, with project Blued Dharma. Of the eight music pieces of the album, the five are written for the set-up of Farrugia, the remaining three are standards, and among these are my attention, especially of the two different versions of the same piece – the Ray Nobles Cherokee from 1938. It is the same number but in the two versions unfolded with different temperaments. Where the 2 is many faceted, the 1 is scratched, but both are fascinating and give ample opportunity to hear what capabilities it is meeting here. Individually and together they are two virtuoso, brave and expressive.
